Is Dog Poop Good Fertilizer for Your Lawn?

Infographic: why dog poop is not good fertilizer for grass - Monarch K-9 Waste Removal, Omaha NE.

No. Dog poop is not good fertilizer for grass or gardens. Unlike composted cow manure, dog waste is high in nitrogen and carries bacteria and parasites, so piles left on the lawn burn yellow patches into the turf instead of feeding it. The safest move is to scoop it at least weekly and put it in the trash.

Is dog poop good fertilizer for grass?

No. Fertilizer feeds a lawn slowly and evenly. Dog poop does the opposite: it drops a concentrated load in one spot and sits there. The grass under the pile is smothered, the nitrogen scorches the blades around it, and you are left with a yellow or brown patch. After 28 years of scooping Omaha yards, we can usually tell how long a pile has been sitting by the size of the dead spot under it.

Why is cow manure fertilizer but dog poop is not?

Two reasons: diet and processing.

  • Diet. Cows eat plants. Dogs eat a protein-rich diet, which makes their waste much higher in nitrogen and far harsher on turf.
  • Processing. The manure sold in bags at the garden center has been composted and aged. The pile in your backyard is raw.
  • Germs. According to a U.S. EPA pet-waste fact sheet, one gram of dog waste contains an average of 23 million fecal coliform bacteria.

Does dog poop kill grass?

It can. A single pile left for a week or two usually leaves a visible dead patch. A yard that goes unscooped for a season ends up spotted with them, and the grass often needs reseeding to recover. Weekly pickup is the point where lawn damage stays under control. Our guide on how often to pick up dog poop walks through the right schedule for your yard.

Can you compost dog poop instead?

Not in a normal backyard pile. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists “pet waste and cat litter” among the things to avoid adding to a backyard compost pile. Home piles rarely get hot enough, for long enough, to make pet waste safe.

Is dog poop safe to use in a vegetable garden?

No. Dog waste can carry roundworm eggs, and the CDC says those eggs reach the soil through animal waste. That is not something you want in the bed where your tomatoes grow. We cover the family health side in Is Dog Poop Dangerous for Kids and Pets?

What should Omaha dog owners do with dog poop instead?

  1. Scoop at least once a week. Twice a week for multiple dogs or small yards.
  2. Bag it and put it in the trash. Do not rake it into the lawn or toss it in the garden.
  3. Do not wait for winter to handle it. Frozen waste does not break down. It reappears all at once in the spring thaw.
  4. Or hand it off. Monarch K-9 Waste Removal offers weekly, biweekly and one-time residential dog poop pickup across Omaha, Bellevue, Bennington, Council Bluffs, Elkhorn, Gretna, La Vista, Louisville, Millard, Papillion, Plattsmouth, Ralston, Springfield, Valley, Waterloo and Yutan.
