How Long Does Dog Poop Take to Decompose?

Infographic: how long dog poop takes to decompose, from nine weeks to a year - Monarch K-9, Omaha NE.

Dog poop takes about nine weeks to break down in ideal warm, moist conditions and up to a year to decompose fully. In an Omaha winter it barely breaks down at all, because frozen waste just sits under the snow until the thaw. It stays a health hazard the whole time, so scoop at least weekly.

How long does dog poop take to decompose?

It depends on heat and moisture. The Canton, Massachusetts Department of Public Works puts the best case at about nine weeks “in ideal conditions.” At the other end, the City of College Station, Texas tells residents that dog waste takes up to a year to fully decompose. Most backyards land somewhere in between.

Does dog poop decompose in winter?

Barely. The microbes that break waste down slow to a crawl in the cold, and frozen waste does not break down at all. In Omaha that means every pile dropped from the first hard freeze to spring is still there when the snow melts. We see it every March: a yard that looked fine under snow turns out to be holding three or four months of waste. A one-time or seasonal cleanup resets it.

Does rain or snowmelt wash dog poop away?

No. It spreads it. Rain and meltwater break piles apart and carry what is in them across the lawn and toward the street. According to a U.S. EPA pet-waste fact sheet, one gram of dog waste contains an average of 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, and storm drains do not filter any of it out.

Is it OK to leave dog poop in the yard to break down on its own?

No, because the waste gets more hazardous before it disappears. The CDC says roundworm eggs reach the soil through animal waste and that it takes 2 to 4 weeks in the environment for the eggs to develop enough to cause infection. So a pile that is three weeks old is a bigger risk than a fresh one, and it still has weeks or months left before it is gone. The CDC’s advice is to pick pet waste up daily.

What speeds up or slows down dog poop decomposition?

  • Temperature. Warm speeds it up. Freezing stops it.
  • Moisture. Damp waste breaks down. Dried-out waste hardens and lingers.
  • Sun and shade. Piles in shade or tall grass tend to last longer.
  • Volume. Two or more dogs add waste faster than a yard can ever break it down.

How often should you pick up dog poop instead of waiting?

At least once a week for most Omaha yards, and twice a week with multiple dogs or a small yard. That keeps waste from reaching the 2 to 4 week mark where parasite eggs turn infectious. Barely. Frozen waste does not break down. It sits under the snow and reappears all at once during the spring thaw.
